Haliuk Brings Size And Strength To Cougar Women’s Hockey

Madison Haliuk has committed to the Cougar women’s hockey team for the 2022-23 season.

From a farm in Binscarth, MB, Haliuk has spent many hours on the road to develop her skills on the ice. Driving 2.5 hours to and from Binscarth to Portage la Prairie to practice, twice a week, she has shown true dedication and love for the sport.

Haliuk is a forward for the Central Plains Capitals that play in the Manitoba Female Hockey League. So far she’s amassed 9 goals and 13 assists on the season. She comes with a long list of hockey accolades including being selected to the Hockey Manitoba U16 Top 100 Program of Excellence, winning a provincial silver medal with the Bantam Ice-Dogs and being selected for the Central Plains Capitals Coaches Award in 2020 as well as achievements in other sports like volleyball and shot put. A member of the Metis nation, more recently Haliuk was selected to Team Manitoba’s 2022 National Aboriginal Hockey Championship roster. She will be competing in the games held in May at Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia.

“I’ve got a high hockey IQ that allows me to be a strong two-way player,” said Haliuk. “My height and strength aid me into controlling the puck and going hard to areas in front of the net to get rebounds.”

Despite having multiple offers to play south of the border, Haliuk is looking forward to staying closer to home and contributing to the winning culture that is Cougars hockey.

“Madison is a power forward, with her size and strength she is hard to defend against,” said head coach Tony Bertone. “Her play in the hard areas will create space for other players.”

Haliuk achieved honour roll status in both grade 11 and grade 12 at Major Pratt School. She’s a 4th generation farmer and will be taking the colleges Agribusiness program in the fall.
