Hargreaves to Make Immediate Impact on Cougar Men’s Volleyball Team

BRANDON, Man. (March 1, 2022) – Local talent, Ryden Hargreaves will play for the 2022-23 Cougars Men’s Volleyball team.

The 6’6 left side was a member of the Brandon Volleyball Club from U13 through to U18 until the pandemic shut things down. He stepped away from the sport for a few years and shifted his athletic focus to golf, a sport he also excelled at and wasn’t as hindered by COVID restrictions. The draw back towards volleyball grew once he started coaching the junior varsity team at his alma mater, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School.

Hargreaves was a standout student athlete in his hometown of Brandon, MB. Playing for the Plainsmen in high school, he received the 2020 Male Athlete of the Year in his graduating year. The same year, he received the City of Brandon Athlete of the Year award. He excelled not only on the volleyball court but also playing basketball in his final year, leading the team in rebounds, shot blocks and 3 point shots. His well-rounded athleticism doesn’t stop there. He won multiple golf tournaments including the Provincial Junior Boys’ Rural Championship in 2019. A title he earned after shooting 73 on the course hosted by Glen Lea Golf Course.

“I’ve always been a good passer and I grew taller and gained strength over the pandemic so I’m better offensively too,” said Hargreaves. “The coaching staff for the Cougars are really good and I feel will help me grow as a player. I like the direction the program is heading. I think we will have a competitive team next year”

“Ryden is an offensive threat and a solid passing left side,” said coach Small. “He has a few more years of experience, brings a good energy to the court and has a good volleyball IQ having both coached and played.”

Hargreaves will be taking the college’s Construction Electrician program in the fall.

“I took some electronics courses in high school and enjoyed them. The program sounds super interesting and would open up lots of opportunities for me,” said Hargreaves.
