What happens if there's a tie?

A five-minute, 4v4 sudden victory overtime (OT) shall be played in all preliminary (pool and crossover games played between Wednesday-Friday) games that end in a tie during regulation time. There will be no ice cut before this overtime period. Officials shall allow a three-minute rest period. Goalies will change ends. In the event that a pool play game is tied after an overtime period, the game will remain a tie.

The following tie breakers will be applied in the event of ties in points between teams in the same pool at the end of three pool play games to determine who advances to the semi-finals:

1- Head to head competition

2- Number of wins

3- Fewest goals against in all tournament games

4- Goal differential in all tournament games

5- Fewest penalty minutes in all tournament games

6- Coin flip by the commissioner, called in the air by the higher seeded team

In the event that a semi-final or championship game ends in a tie after regulation time, there shall be an intermission with an ice cut, followed by a 20-minute, 5v5 sudden victory overtime. 20-minute overtime periods separated by ice cuts will be played until a goal is scored. In all tournament games, penalties remaining at the end of the third period will carry into overtime periods. There will be no shootouts. One Time Out will be granted to both teams if a game enters overtime.

What is the tournament format?

The tournament will be comprised of 12 Women’s DII teams, divided into four pools of three. Every team will play three games: the two other teams in their pool, and one crossover game. Teams will earn two points for a win and one point for a tie. No points are awarded to a team for an OT loss. The team with the most points in their pool will advance to the Semi-Finals on Saturday, with the National Championship taking place on Sunday.
